What software do you all suggest I use to open, read, reply, and send messages via qwk? During my dos years, I used bluewave but, by 1997, it was impossible to register the software from shareware. And had that nag screen.

In your home directory there will be a file named '.mmailrc'

Edit this file and you'll see where you can specify the editor
    you'd like to use.

    I prefer 'nano'.

I think the command you'd want in vim is: <Esc>:wq<Enter>

That's what I did. :) Only issue with nano is it can't do a word wrap on the display only like Windows Notepad can, so you don't get to see long paragraphs that you type, until the message is actually posted. Other than that, nano is great.

But does that wrap the saved text as well? That doesn't look great on terminals with widths other than 80(ish) columns. I know nano can wrap text, but it saves the file that way too. I only want wrapping on the screen, but not in the saved file.

FTN standard is no line breaks within paragraps. Some software inclused so-called "soft CRs" that FTN software is supposed to ignore, but they may help with local displays. Good old Windows Notepad actually gets it right. If you turn word wrap on in Notepad, it wraps nicely on the screen, but the text is saved as a single unbroken line of text, which is perfect for FTNs.

Okay. There's been a lot of talk in recent weeks in various echos about this subject, and it's hard to keep up with some of that stuff. As an experiment, I've turned off wrapping in this message (in nano), and so far this very long line keeps scrolling to the right with no wrapping. We'll see how it looks when posted, I guess. :)

It's obvious that it wrapped. I did the same experiment the other day trying to figure out how to get emacs to wrap at 78 lines. Then I read somewhere that it happens automatically when posting. I experimented with a post by typing all in one line. It worked. Then a subsequent post I made, it didn't. I mean, the text didn't scroll to the right, but it didn't wrap. So I wasn't sure why it worked and didn't.
