• Door game development

From calcmandan@77:1/110 to All on Sat Feb 29 19:09:42 2020
I'm considering creating a new door game and was wondering if anyone can advise me on the best source for information on how to do it.

I'm considering doing it in pascal (will need to do some serious brushing up) and intend to relearn it by doing this project.

The game I have in mind will be a star trek-like theme and, to avoid the need to pay for rights, it will be named something else. It will be mostly text base with a few minor graphical elements (mostly boards and option screens).

At some point, I will be asking for assistance on design and coding.

Intention is to be FOSS and, naturally, a cloud hosted central server will be part of the design.

Is it hard to write the games for BBS use?

We have quite a few programmers on here especially a few who are pascal geniuses, I am not one of them. Whatever questions you may have, I am sure people on here can guide you in the right direction.

Most excellent. I'll begin designing soon. I will have it up on sourceforge and solicit involvement for coding.

I am partial to games which have InterBBS support. Just saying ;)

That's the plan. I want to have a local instance, interbbs instance, and MMO hosted mode. I hope it's possible.
Anyway, the point of the project is to develop fresh game tech for BBS land.

Maybe merge interbbs and MMO mode, not sure how it could be implemented.

I'm designing a phased approach to character development.

The LORD model is part of the inspiration. PVP will be between factions {fed, kling, rom}. Unlockable alpha class {borg}. It's still early yet, we'll see.
It's still early and I have many design decisions to make. Hopefully I can do enough forum/bbs/usenet/fido jabber to garner interest in design assitance.
I'll begin my campaign at a point I feel ready.

As I create my design plan, the more scope creep I encounter. Forcing myself
to keep it simple as I relearn the language.

Luckily there's good support for mysql in pascal so that makes me happy. I'm hoping that there's enough effiency in existing libraries where I can code in random events.

Anyone interested in hearing my game idea beyond what I've already mentioned?

I think you'd have worse luck finding someone around here who is /not/ interested :) Please, do tell!

    Gooood.

Basically star trek, and inspired by a text based game i played as a child called
Kobayashi Alternative. It had more graphics than i plan to use. Anyway, inspired only that it is text
    based and star trek.

The plan is to start off as a level 1 starfleet/klingon/romulan cadet and do the normal levelling up.
You pick a species, profession, and attributes. Naturally, all species and professions would have their
    specialized attributes.

After a certain level you get your first ship assignment. Depending on your profession will depend on
your daily activity. Medical would do 'missions' whereby they have to treat a patient and the
'graphical' tricorder will give you a relatively simple puzzle to solve to cure the patient.
Engineering would get something similar when doing a diagnostic on a system in engineering. You get the
    idea.

Everyone would get 'away missions' where they have to use a tricorder to locate a downed ship and
rescue survivors, or something. It would start by 'beaming down' and 'walking' with a coordinate sstem
to locate your mission. Sometimes it'll be battle, rescue, or escort. Standard fare.

I hope to release the game in a playable manner and build features as I go, and hopefully I'll build
enough notoriety to get assistance for development. It would start as a simple game.

The ultimate dream would include an online instance of the galaxy.Eventually I want a unified
server instance that each board will connect to that levelled characters can begin their full
starfleet/klingon/romulan careers. They can go explore, find areas to mine for their side. Currency
would be in ship funds. Research for new tehnologies would benefit your side. It would depend on the
unity of the players on each side. Prestige would get built to go toward promotions.

As you can see, scope creep already hit me. I just want something to play that isn't LORD, something
fresh, and something I can develop. It's been a while since I've done any project of substance away
from work and hope to build a bit of a community in this effort. If not, then that's fine too. I hope
to find an audience to enjoy the game once it's out. And I hope sysops would take pleasure into folding
    it into their offerings.

Any graphics designed for the game would naturally be ANSI. I envision tricorder screens being
rendered, away mission maps perhaps, ship systems, simple shipboard maps.

I really hope to get this game off the ground.

youre welcome. I really didn't want to bore with excess detail.

I checked out two good books from my county library. one is advanced programming with data structures
that was published in the late eighties. it's a college book actually, meant for comp sci majors. the
other is a standard pascal textbook also from the late eighties. i find that these books work best for
me on relearning especially with the mini projecs and exerciises.

    i'm using youtube too.

just now getting around to flowcharting for 'voyages' as I conceive the game, its development, and how
    characters will evolve.

i'm glad to have a small community in here to talk to.
