• MODS FOR SYNCHRONET

From hustler@77:1/911 to All on Tue Oct 13 13:07:58 2020
Does anyone do mods for Synchronet? I mean new mods. Not mods from 10 years ago? I see so many nice mods for Mystic and nothing good for Synchronet. I'm talking about mods like todays famous birthdays, Weather, CNN, Fox News or
even the COVID-19 one. Is Synchronet difficult to write mods for? Back in the day I was always adding mods to my Renegade BBS. When you purchased BBS software that's how they made money. Mods, Door games etc. I miss all that.

Why is the subject line capitalized?

For Synchronet, I think most people just write their own shell in javascript and basically wind up with a custom BBS. Javascript is pretty
straightforward, super well documented, so I think people end up writing
their own stuff and applying it to their own board. The mod scene these days seems to focus a lot more on mystic and cnet (for amiga).

Yea I see that. Is there a reason mods are no longer written for
Synchronet? If people are modding there own boards why wouldn't they want to share with other Synchronet SysOps? As far as I can see echicken is the only one making mods for Synchronet but I could be wrong.

Nothing. I use a few of them. Just looking for something new such as horoscopes or news, or a Covid update. Something new. That's all.

I think there's an aspect of Synchronet specifically benefiting from an
entire custom shell. It's not really plug-and-play moddable like we grew up with in Renegade, Telegard, etc., so it doesn't lend itself as well to that style of modding (IMO). It's one of the reasons I prefer other softwares, but
I acknowledge custom Synchronet shells are pretty sick.

Also I think it's the time investment coupled with limited implementation by other sysops. We have so few BBSes nowadays that if someone releases a new Synchronet mod, it's possible a large proportion of Synchronet boards will install the mod, in which case everyone has identical content.

Totally agree. I went with Synchronet because it was easy to get all the FTN stuff going. But hell if Mystic isn't sexy like a lady. It's got that "l33t" look I rememeber from back in the day from the old Celerity systems. The real time spell check is really great too, I wish Slyedit used in Synchronet supported that.

Besides Digital Distortion and Echicken, most of the synchronet bbs I connect to are pretty stock. Any recommendations on ones what are customized?

I'm not sure, but I should mention I don't call many boards. I also prefer
the mystic style boards to the synchronet style boards. Again, this isn't a critique of synchronet, just my two cents :)

Good point. I hadn't thought of that. There's nobody even selling Mods for Synchronet which I think is strange. ANSI screens are being sold. Why not mods? This is the 90's part of me talking. ;-)

    People sold mods? *shrug*

I think modding is actually a gateway drug into programming for a lot of sysops. I know it was for me :) If you want some mods, my best advice is to figure out how to roll your own!

Check out https://www.ansigarden.com, I've picked up a couple pieces from Luciano in the past. He's also open to custom work, it's not cheap, but you know it will be amazing and unique!

Lusiano did the artwork for The ROCK III. He is a legend in the ANSI art world and a real pleasure to work with! I highly recommend going to him if you just dont want to take the time or if you want a real custom system from a consummate professional. I'll be working with him on my next project, for sure.

You probably already know this, but just in case: Some Synch boards let you choose a theme. If you choose WWIV, it's very Mystic/Renegadelike. At least on some boards. Some of them probably disable that to force users into the Synch standard theme. (They don't call it theme but something else like menu style
    or something.)
