• Apple II Forever!

From Spectre@21:3/101 to Anybody on Thu May 27 21:46:00 2021
Hmmm so what have we got...

    II+ Clone - Videx clone 80col card, 128k Saturn Card, 2x5.25"
IIe Clone - CloneE, 512k RamWorks Clone, 1Mb RamFactor, 2x5.25" with a switch selectable FloppyEmu floppy emulator, Z-80 CP/M card.
IIgs ROM1 - MicroDrive Turbo, and a VidHD for HDMI output, 4Mb RAM card

I'd probably still give my left or maybe even both testicles at this stage for a ROM3... got some general spare bits around too if you're in the market for anything, or looking for something.

Are we listing our systems? Most of mine are still currently untested but
they are all together at least now.

    Apple II
    Apple II+ x 2
    Bell & Howell Apple II+
    5+ various Apple IIe's
    5+ various Apple IIgs'
    Apple IIc x 2
    Laser 128ex
    IIe card for Mac LC

Plus a bunch of monitors, addon cards, etc. I have been collecting since the early 90s and I have worked in K-12 schools so I have had good luck obtaining Apple products.

You can do whatever strikes your fancy.

the early 90s and I have worked in K-12 schools so I have had good
    luck obtaining Apple products.

Half your luck... I only had access way back when to a couple of public schools which all had bog standard equipment, so mostly IIe's with Monitor II's and DuoDrives.

Managed to pick some goodies up through an Apple user group.. but unfortunately most of that slipped through my fingers long ago during a messy split.

What I have now is mostly the acquisition of a couple of years, and odd contacts that come my way.

    Apple II Apple II+ x 2 Bell & Howell Apple II+ 5+ various Apple IIe's
5+ various Apple IIgs' Apple IIc x 2 Laser 128ex IIe card for Mac LC

Thats quite the haul... Never seen a Darth Vader, I don't believe we have them here in Aus.. The 128ex's are much like the IIc+ aren't they? We never got the IIc+ either, but I think there are some 128's around.

Out of mine I mostly use the GS, but I'm struggling to find a monitot to suit it. Over size and scaled image are a bit marginal. I'm on the hunt for a 12-14" LCD TV with scart on it. I had one and inadvertantly broke the screen.

I think so. I was just watching Adrian's Digital Basement and it seems they have some nice capabilies compared to the original IIc anyway.

Off hand, notably accelsiorator, 1, 2.4 and 3.6 Mhz modes. Probably better serial ports, the IIc's were awful. And maybe more memory unclear if some of that was standard or not. The slot assignments are different too.

I believe you can find adapters for them. I was looking at offering cables up at 8bitclassics.com but I need more time in my life.

While you can find adapters, I find no matter the scaling while it might anti-alias the image leaves a lot to be desired unless you can sit 6Km from the picture. The straight image from GS through SCART cable, no adapter/converter far exceeded anything I can get out of the VidHD for arguments sake.

With a little jiggery pokery inside the SCART connector to tell it what its doing, the GS output will feed directly into a native SCART interface with no issues.

My Apple II collection is a bit more modest. I have an Apple II, and a Royal II (Japanese clone, complete with Japanese keyboard). AFAIK, both work, except for the PSU. I also have a pair of 5.25" drives, a Microsoft Z80 Softcard, 80 column text card and a PAL TV modulator for the Apple (since it's built for the Australian market).

I have fond memories of the Apple II series machines. I never got to use a IIGS, but it was on my wish list in the 80s.

The ROM3 is actually a complete motherboard revision. So you can tell by lifting the lid. The easiest is to check the battery, which you'd actually want to clip out or remove, they're notorious for leaking at this stage. Avoid acid damage now.

The ROM1 has a battery with axial leads soldered into the board, it does hide under the power supply but that will just unclip. The ROM3 has a smaller footprint battery in a holder. Which should be visible. Most school issue ones were early and tend to be ROM1s though :/

Nice Apple II. I have a Apple //e here with a SD Card Drive. Also a very interesting computer system.

Did you get yourself a copy of the game Nox Archaist for the Apple II? Great Ultima IV style game.

    Apple II...Forever...

hmmm, if you/someone else is serious about that, I have two spare Apple II PSU units to give away...not the original ones, but the ones produced by Reactivemicro... I did buy them for my Amstrad, but they did not work for that purpose (at least not in my hands)...so shame to have them in the shelf. Get in touch, will donate them to a true Apple 2 fan for the shipping costs :-) (I'm in Europe though, so easier if the true Apple 2 fan is a European one)

Hmm I believe in Oz we could use at least two. VK3JED has a need for a II+, I also need one for a Clone+. Those things weren't terribly cheep, happy to spring for shipping and help defray your costs.

What was the problem with the Amstrad, obviously power :P But voltage requirements? +12, 5 and -12, 5??

    Hi Spectre,

the problem with the Amstrad I could never really solve. The Voltages come out just fine (and I tested them)), and the 63W were borderline for the Amstrad but should have done it. Better you check the Power supply before you attach it, just to be sure. I have a suspicion that is has to do how the Apple II power supply bridges the 0V, that seems different to the IBM world.

Let me know were to post them (i.e. through a private message)

Ponder been a while, I don't check in here to often. Only just found this buried in the past. The A2 supply is really just a super early switchmode supply. It doen't have to many foibles in the 0 crossings, but what you can
run foul of, is all the voltage regulation is done from the 5v rail. If
there's insufficient load on it, the rest will be all over the place. That
said PC supplies so long as they still provide all the right voltages are easier to work with. I've had an ATX 1.0 supply powering Clone+ but I have to sit it outside the case :/

If you come across this throw me a line, sysop@tlp.zapto.org...

    Hi Spec,

admittedly, this has been some time. Have been logged in BBSess from time to time, but never did a global message scan ;-) Love this slow communication - such a contrast to the rest of the computing world.
I still have the remake of the Apple II power supply unused in the
shelf :-) Run my Amstrad with a AT power supply on which I soldered on the unusual Amstrad DIN plug.. works fine ever since ,-) Get in touch if you're still after the power supply, or for another slow motion message exchange,
    that is ;-)

Woah blast from the past. Still good timing, I've only resurfaced after a couple of months in the wilderness. Always happy to snarf an A2 supply. AT supplies are nice generic beasts you can bend to most "projects"
