TechHeart [me!] posted another video this weekend... this time we're digging in and getting Minix rocking on a Dolch PAC 60 486 system - it was really fun, and Minux 2.0.4 allows for networking [Better have a firewall!] and POSIX fun on retro hardware... what will I use this box for in the future, more to come!

If yer OK w/ YT, come give a watch - and I'd be stoked if you followed as I'm posting more and more... cheers, fsxNet!

Love MINIX! Back in 1994, I ran a 286 with 3 mb of RAM (hostname peanut)
at work. It acted as a caching DNS server, mail host and ran a web
server. I could tell when I received new email, because the 40mb drive
would make a clatter when mail arrived.

Nichael Temari's net utils fell off the net a while ago, did you find
them online somewhere? (or do I need to watch the video to find out?)

It turned out I was one degree of separation from Al Woodhull, the guy
who runs minix1.hampshire.edu - I worked alongside his son.

The butt blur was pretty funny.

So.. what application do you have planned for the Dolch box?

Very cool - it was fun playing w/ Minix as I HADN'T when I was younger...

That being said, Slackware seems like a much 'easier' project if I wanna attempt to get network services, and/or X11, up and running - easily, anyway.

Even if I were able to step up to Minix 3; that would offer more networking support right away... I have Minix 3 running in a VM and its pkgin (Where the heck is packman?! I didn't find it anywhere!) installs a fairly capable package set even in current times... wget, curl, git - its all there.

I even found xScorched, a Scorched Earth clone for early X11 environments; I really wish the 486 would play nicer w/ Minix 3...

Everything said and done, I think the 'best' one can do on a 486 platform today is try getting the newest Slackware version running that is possible; I got FAIRLY far w/ v.11.0 but ultimately THAT one didn't work out for me. I'm gonna continue to step backward on slack until I get to a version that the 486 can perform alright on.

Right?! :P I can't figure out my 'on camera' style just yet - gotta remember to think about the shot!

So.. what application do you have planned for the Dolch box?

    So.... basically, its just 'the 486' in my retro collection. Meaning, the 'application' that I use it for is... I build different 486 systems and .img the partitions. They're all up on 2oFB in varying setups;

    dolch-ezdrive-2part-DOS622-PAC60-other-software-WORKING.img.gz dolch-ezdrive-2part-FreeDOS-FD13Live-FD13BNS-stock-PAC60.img.gz dolch-ezdrive-2part-FreeDOS-stock-PAC60.img.gz dolch-ezdrive-2part-NO-OS-blank.img.gz dolch-ezdrive-4part-FreeDOS-only.img.gz dolch-ezdrive-4part-NO-OS-blank.img.gz dolch-ezdrive-4part-stock-DOS6.22-much-other-software.img.gz dolch-minix-2.0.4-ROOT-BOOT-USR-SYS-CMD-NET-base_install.img.gz dolch-minix-2.0.4-step-8-usage.txt-1.img.gz dolch-slackware-1.01-aDISKS-installation.img.gz
    dolch_originalHDD.tar
    dolch_originalHDD2gb.zip

I guess what I use MOST of the time is an MS-DOS 6.22 installation w/ Desqview/X, Windows 3.1 and all the games and demoscene stuff that I can squeeze on there.

For me, and retro computing, the 'application' IS the tinkering around - the face that I'm still learning new things on a 486, in 2024, is all push I need to keep going. :P

Ah.. yes, I can relate to that, to a certain extent. There was
a period when I was tasked to find a Linux solution to an old
pc. It was fun testing different distros to find the right
match for the hardware and ensure it met the user's needs.

But for me, the OS doesn't matter as much as having a system
that is reliable and that supports the different things that I
    need to get done.

It's looking like NetBSD is the best candidate for a usable system; even the newest 10.0 supports i386 and floppy booting.

Cheers, Paulie - that's good to know...

As I sit here on a gen 1 Pentium laptop which I ended up installing Alpine onto because it was the only one I could find that would install on that old of a chip :(

Maybe I'm being super thick but it seems like half the packages aren't available in Alpine for x86 32 bit. I'm jamming apk files on via serial because it can't figure out my PCMCIA network card and there's no lrzsz package available so I'm having to hand-uu-encode-decode everything. Got to say, not loving it at the moment!

    Cheers,

I love coming here and seeing how many other minds are still wrapped around these platforms that we love. :P

The Pentium offered a TINY BIT more oomph than my setup, but I hear your pain - sooner or later we won't have 25% of packages; live in the now... its a good time for retro!

    Hi, Paulie.

    a good time for retro!

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a current software to run on this laptop. It says designed for Windows 95 right there on the sticker.

Windows 95 only came out... ah, crap!
