• Retronet?

From MIKE POWELL@21:1/175 to COMMODORE CLIFFORD on Tue Aug 29 09:14:00 2023
Were there ever any messages in RetroNet? Asking because once, long ago,

Early on after I first joined, there was traffic but only in certain areas.
Others were always dead. It was similar to PiNet... lots of traffic for a brief while then *poof* it went dead.

The other thing about his nets... Like tons and tons and tons of dead
    echos.

In the case of PiNet, anyway, he did cut a bunch of dead ones out, which
helped for a while. That was a good net when it started but, once the "pi mania" period sort of passed, so did the network.

Otherwise, I get your point, and it is funny. :) There are some other networks like that... ones that would have benefited in their infancy if
the NC had created a few, more general echoes instead of a whole bunch of
    very specific ones.

Well, I don't know if it's funny... it's really kinda sad.

But the thing is, so many of these nets were run by this guy. Almost as
    bad as that Kofu guy?

But then one day, this guy goes on some rant over something I can't
really remember right now and I was like "ok, I'm just going to walk away slowly".

So please, don't resurrect this mess. If there was anything of value,
let's just add it to existing nets to make them stronger. Same with any
    other nets of his.

Yeah..... I guess you guys are right.... The last thing we need is to
perhaps get more people focused on the retro discussion here on fsxNet
and make this an even better network when we can just keep all these dead othernets around!!!!

So I'm happy to host another network - that's kinda why Im building clearing houz, so it would be easy to do.

I've done it before, for sportnet and scinet, which many folks wanted brought back to life, after the original ZC disappeared or went offline.

Both those networks eventually died a quiet death (there was no traffic) so I pulled the pin on them.

I did kinda like pinet/retronet - I enjoyed the conversation that went on, albeit I didnt add too much.

But if you want them brought back to life I can, let me know...

That said, we can just get some new echos created here if Paul is onboard, I'm easy either way.

i'd be more inclined to tack more echos onto an existing net if i were doing it.. the catch 22 is mostly the same though.. for example, if you create an echo about car stuff, suddenly the huge 3 month long thread about cars dries up.. you can see the amount of traffic the retro area gets here and on fidonet. will a net with 10 echos of that further broken out gain any traction? it seems it's died quite a few times already.

Does this just need a new home? I know several place's with server space. What would it take to move it? PC wise. As long as it wouldn't take more than a 4 core 8 gigs of ram and 120G of space I could get space for it.

If that sounds good I would need to know who is going to run it and what type of remote access software your comfortable with.

If you can bring back RetroNet, pInet, and CommodoreNet, all that Carlos ran, that would be great.. I am sure he would give you everything he has on it, I know he has been fighting health issues for a while now. The sad part is they are all completely dead now, nothing passes at all.. His BBS is still running, I think you might even be able to get in touch with him on Facebook.

LOL I run them all too.. I have a few that are dead, all of the Necromicon board nets are still hooked up here (Retro, Commodore, pi) WhisperNet is still hooked up and I know it is toast. I guess in a couple of weeks, I will start my weeding of networks. If I get no responses in 2 weeks time to a test message I will remove the network.. That should leave me 2 networks .. LOL

i'd be more inclined to tack more echos onto an existing net if i were doing it.. the catch 22 is mostly the same though.. for example, if you create an echo about car stuff, suddenly the huge 3 month long thread about cars dries up.. you can see the amount of traffic the retro area gets here and on fidonet. will a net with 10 echos of that further
broken out gain any traction? it seems it's died quite a few times already.

I'm late to this thread but I tend to agree with the sentiment.
