• Apple II GS - intro for a total newbie

From hollowone@21:2/150 to All on Tue May 30 14:03:51 2023
    All right,

I don't have the computer but I just downloaded GSPlus app on my MacOS.
I found ROMs and I have a tone of games from eXoAppleIIGS package as .po files.

How the heck I can load them manually, how to control that basic alike environment. I also saw GS can have System Software 6.0.1 that looks like modern MacOS to some degree.. How can I get it installed..

Many Hows.. can anybvody point me to some good intro tutorial, articles, or that can help me kick off from here?

No idea :) I've got the real hardware, but never used any of the emulators. .po files are prodos ordered files meaning they're disk images, so you'll need to look for some way to mount them. Most likely they'll be 800k images o you'd be mounting them on the 3.5" drive usually slot 5 drive 1. However there is nothing stopping a .po file being a 140k 5.25" images which would normally mount of slot 6 drive 1. You just let the size of the file guide you.

Once you figure out how to mount them, you'll also need to figure out how to make yourself some kind of image to mount up as a hard drive, after that installation of GS/OS ought to be a doddle, just mount the installer image, boot it, and tell it to install on whatever your HD image is. It'll probably take 3-4 disk swaps.

So... this doesn't actually answer yer question, but: https://www.livingcomputers.org/Online-Resources/Online-Emulators.aspx

This site has online emulators... scroll down and you'll find the Apple IIe; I used this site to help me learn how to load softwares. It has several different 'disks' that you can load up; and in its documentation gives you some how-to's on Apple IIe commands and their syntax.

I've since forgotten, but it did get me going on the Apple IIe platform.

I already know how to mount them and accidentally learnt how to boot from these images via right CMD+CTRL+ESC to get to some kind of AppleII bios setup and set right slot to be detected for booting.

But some work and some generate data access errors. I checked the size of the .po file and they are like single digit MB in size. Unlikely a floppy disk image. Did Apple IIGS support some hard drives as well?

I like challenges like this, but I must admit this Apple II thing is out of this planet to me.

The only real native HD support is SCSI, which means larger images of a variety of sizes up to 40Mb are also likely to be Prodos based images, if they're over 40Mb then its more likely they'll be HFS. For which you'll need the HFS.fst installed for.

You've probably picked the harshest learning curve out of any of them. The GS tried to be more flexible in its use, allowing for the onboard assets to enabled or disabled for any given slot. In an emulator there's probably not a lot to change.

Same - I have another suggestion, but not really to learn how to USE the Apple IIe; Dura-Europos BBS runs on physical IIe hardware, and the sysOp Skip does AWESOME stuff @ 9600 baud. (Such as SIXEL graphics if you use Syncterm and other trickery...) Its so amazing what he can do - and mind blowing when you know the hardware he runs it on:

In raw hardware terms though, the IIGS is a pretty amazing computer. I love mine and have several addons. I find it an excellent platform for the really old games I grew up playing in primary school.

I have to agree, by the time I got my first one, it was probably already getting a little long in the tooth. Not sure of the year now, but it was a ROM3 that shipped with System 5.04 on floppies.

It had a few firsts going for it too. First ADB system, first color gui OS for Apple... I have some bits and pieces for my current one, its a ROM1, really miss as ROM3, MDT in place of a SCSI card, but I'd like to get hold of a SCSI card and an accelsiorator for it..

I have the CFFA3000 for a virtual HD/virtual floppy solution and am happy with it. I also have a TransWarp GS accelerator which makes GSOS feel pretty snappy. I've upgraded the PSU. I also added a Phasor sound card. My computer happens to be a ROM3 which is pretty fortunate. It's a great little machine. I keep finding new things to play around with on it. Aside from my Amiga 1200, it's my most used retro computer.

Any ADB keyboard pretty much will work with it. Only exception is the ergonomic keyboard for some reason. M0487 are fairly common. You'll want to find an ADB Mouse as well, it'll daisy chain into the keybpard.

Hey man, not sure if you saw the emails I sent but I'm still waiting for you to send me any sort of payment for this item that I mailed you months ago. This is probably just something that fell through the cracks but I have tried emailing you a few times since and have not heard back so hopefully this is a reasonable way to get your attention. Thanks.
