• Anyone know how a beginner can do VRML without opening a text editor?

From NightCat@21:4/141 to All on Wed May 3 18:38:32 2023
So it started a short while back when I found out about VRML from a Vinesauce video exploring VRML stuff. This has given me so much awestruck and wonder I really wanted to build my own stuff in VRML but there's one problem:

I have no clue how in sam hill to do this, and I need what room left in my memory for making websites via HTML because I can't find a way to get a copy of frontpage to run on modern operating systems or a windows 9x virtual machine.

Is there a simpler way to make stuff with VRML via something similar to a frontpage equivalent for VRML? I have a lot of ideas for stuff I could do with a platform like this, but my energy for learning a system that mostly relies on being created via just typing has been taken up by HTML.

Since you mentioned Front Page, I use a newer concept of that software call Microsoft Expressions Web 4. I works similar to FP, but has a lot of new features. You can download it by going to my main site at:
    http://hobbyline.com/WEB_TRIAL_EN.EXE

It says that it is a trial, but it doesn't need to be registered. Give it a try and let me know if it works for you. I use it daily to create web sites.

Man, I haven't seen that in forever, was just this morning trying to remember the name of it. Kind of wish there was something very similar that worked as a template for a static blog that could be published to S3, Cloudflare or similar without a server-side piece that can be attacked.

Yeah, all I need is a templating system to take a directory full of text
files format/prettify them and generate HTML files that I can upload to
a web host. I don't need anything running on the web host.

Wow. VRML.. last time I saw it running was 1997 or so. I considered this technology is long time dead?

Is there even a client that can render it correctly on modern computers?
It'd be interesting to see how VRML performs on modern GPUs.. but honestly WebGL and WebGPU is the way I'd invest my time to create 3D stuff in a browser.

Static blog engines don't need such obsolete and overbloated editors I think. Hugo comes with handy commandlines that should be easily incorporated into any editor and natively it supports MD to edit posts.

Expression was interesting effort from Microsoft to catch up with Web authoring, like about 15 years ago. But as with Silverlight, they were so much late to the game.

They only one last breed from that bucket that I think is still actively developed is Dreamweaver from Adobe, but I haven't seen that animal for a while as well.. All of them together apply more to the Jurassic Park than a modern computing zoo..
