• Hub 3 was down for a bit...

From deon@21:2/116 to All on Fri Nov 27 23:20:37 2020
    Howdy,

    Isnt it always the case.

I left home today at 3pm to pick up my daughter and head off to see my Dad - I 3hr journey.

After catching up with him (havent seen him since Jan due to COVID), I thought I'd login to the BBS and see what's going on. It was dead.

According to the logs the Pi died at 2:58pm!

But all is back now (I'm hoping) and things should flow again. I'll check tomorrow morning for any reporting anything amiss!

Some folks have asked me why do I run ESXi on the Pi? This is why. I'm 300 klm away and not home until Sunday. With ESXi, I could connected to the web console, see that the drive had failed disappeared, reboot it (fingers crossed it re-appeared and it did), check/repair it, and then start the BBS VM...

Its been running a month or two under ESXi, so its pretty solid - hoping my USB drive isnt failing - fingers crossed... ;)

Not sure if it would have an advantages over LXC containers (for my usage). I have a 32-bit Pi anyway, so ESXi would not work.

    OK, I'm home now.

The Pi was kinda hot and Friday/Saturday were hot days here, so it may all be related.

I've tken the cover of the Pi and restarted it - seems to be OK but easier to keep an eye on it now...

I believe it is free forever, but you loose some functionality after 180 days. (The 1st 180 days are effectively a fully licensed with a lot of features - probably lost on the pi anyway, then it reverts to a standard license which I think is good enough.)

If you look around, there is a fairly easy way to reset the 180 days (or there used to be anyway).

Not sure if it would have an advantages over LXC containers (for my usage). I have a 32-bit Pi anyway, so ESXi would not work.

I run docker in the VMs, so you could use it for a better "host" management (if you needed it)...

I'm an ESXi/vCenter guy at work, giving Proxmox a try. I'm pretty
excited about it, but might want to switch to ESXi at some point.

ESXi is very picky about hardware, whereas Proxmox seems to run on
anything Intel/AMD that can run Debian.

Pretty sure it's free for home/personal use for as long as I've
known. Whether that'll change in the future is anyone's guess.

We used Proxmox to run over 600 VMs at my former job. We even had the fun stuff working, like migrating running VMs between VMhosts with their IPs with no downtime. Proxmox is capable of a lot and we never had any serious issues with it.

Yeah, this is true - mainly because VMware themselves only provide drivers for named hardware. You can also only run it on CPUs that have the hardware virtualisation extensions.

There is a German website (dont recall it off the top of my head), that has many drivers for consumer hardware. I've even got ESXi on my APU1D!
