    Hey

I've been thinking about adding Mailing Lists (read-only) support, I
guess it would work by having an email account for your BBS and download
the messages into areas from that.

I'm not sure how write support would work.

I got thinking it might be nice to have the "Forward BBS Mail to Email
option." also would be an option for people to recover their passwords by themselves, or have some kind of email verification system.

It would only go one way ie. i don't think doing what synchronet does
with a full blown email system where every user gets an email address. So
all emails would be from the BBS noreply email address and to the address
users give when they sign up.

I'd probably do it either via a locally installed sendmail program or a
    user defined SMTP server.

    What do you guys think?

    Andrew

Normally you'd have an email account per list, so each list can be gated to a different echo

I'm not sure how write support would work.

on Synchronmet, all outgoing list mail is sent from the echo's email address (which it is subscribed to the list with). The "real name" field is populated with the actual poster's handle or real name (whichever is in use).

I got thinking it might be nice to have the "Forward BBS Mail to Email option." also would be an option for people to recover their passwords

    Could be useful.

Yeah outbound only for forwarding, etc makes sense. But you do need inbound email for mailing list support.

I guess that would be more fool proof, I was thinking of using filters.

You probably could, providing the mailing list had the right headers (List-Id: for instance). Where that would fail is "broadcast" lists that are often used for one way traffic. Many of those don't include all the headers of a full mailing list.

... Because of BBSing, reading and writing actually pay off!
