• UltraSoft doors

Ohh ... these are old comport doors, they are on my "sub" bbs that is run on NetSerial as these door need a comport to run. But all
the UltraSoft doors are cool too, and have HORRIBLE delays unregistered.

I logged in to check the games out, one note - when I used /G to quit to the main BBS, I was disconnected.

Lotta games on (both) the doors menus!

They have great ANSI and sorta fun games. AHRA Pro Drag Racing, Indy Speedway, etc. etc. I think I have a base just for them.

I didn't see a base just for UltraSoft doors, but I did find AHRA Pro Drag Racing and Indy Speedway in the alphabetized pages. The ANSI is pretty nice!

I tried AHRA Pro Drags and the race seemed to happen in the blink of an eye? It went from 'staging' to 'you blew your engine - you lose' in an instant. I wonder if there's a timing issue in the game?

Indy Speedway also seemed to happen in an instant when I tried it.

I didn't download them while I was connected, so I'll be back to pick them up later. :)

Yeah the main BBS should hang you up with /G .... the comport bbs should just disconnect you back to the main bbs with /G.

Yeah ... I might have to run MOSLO on it .... but back in the day it was awesome. :)

Indy Speedway also seemed to happen in an instant when I tried it.

    I see you grabbed them.

It must have been a glitch - yesterday I was disconnected when I used /G from the comport BBS - just now I called to try it again and prove that I got hung up on... And it worked fine - /G dropped me back to the main BBS, like it should.

I tried AHRA Pro Drags and the race seemed to happen in the blink of an eye

Yeah ... I might have to run MOSLO on it .... but back in the day it was awesome. :)

When I tried running it in DOSBox with CPU cycles limited to ~486 speed, the game did seem to run better, so I think you're right slowing it down a bit should fix it.

    I see you grabbed them.

I did! And also realized that Acey Deucey is an UltraSoft door and I had already taken a quick peek at that, and then put it aside for a bit because the .EXE is packed and I haven't found an unpacker.

I looked a bit at AHRA Pro Drags v1.8 and it also is packed - presumably all the UltraSoft doors will be using the same system.

UNP 4.12 did not work to unpack the .EXEs, maybe there's another unpacker that will recognize these .EXEs - after it's successfully unpacked, the crack/keygen process would be similar to others I've completed (but while the .EXE is packed, everything is too obfuscated to be able to crack). If I don't find an existing unpacker, I'll have to learn how to unpack it myself so it'll be a bit of an extended project.

Summary: The UltraSoft doors are on my list of interesting software to crack, but may stay on the list for a while due to the need to unpack .EXEs. If anyone has different unpackers to try, this information would be really useful.

Did you check all the DOS crackers/unpackers I have on the hard drive files here? I remember when I was trying to unpack ezrom so I could tppatch, I tried like 30000 different ones, so I started collecting.

I haven't gone through them yet, I will be by shortly to collect them and start the tests. :)

here's a link for a tutorial to unpack binaries with the dosbox debugger.. it didn't help me with the program i tried it on, but worth a shot

    https://codejuggle.dj/unpack-dos-binaries-dosbox-debugger/

if it doesn't work as easy as in the tutorial maybe you can manually step over it, dump everything, and hopefully convince ida to like it. won't really help if you need to crack it tho..

https://reverseengineering.stackexchange.com/questions/3074/decompiling-a-1990- dos-application also has some interesting software suggestions, but as they mentioned they might be difficult to find

That's a nice simple technique, makes sense that it could work a lot of the time too, will keep it in mind.

Found a keymaker for Cartel on Danger Bay just uploaded today, so no need for that one anymore ... I guess we're left with Evangalist Wars. :)

There should be a setting in the .cfg file to adjust the speed of the race.
I know Saratoga has it so I would think Indy would also.

I paid for the Pro version of MOSLO, so not sure how the free one will work. But this setting I use for Alpha Colonly VI (Another that would be cool to crack since source was lost), and all the other doors and it seems to work very well over here. Just added this to AHRA and it seemed to slow it down enough to actually use the door.

    Cmd line below.

Do you know if any of the door game collections or information sites have MOSLO settings (or other slowdown settings, like cycles in DOSBox) for various games? It just occurred to me that I have seen references to speed issues (and moslo specifically) here and there, but usually it boils down to "if you notice it's too fast, slow it down until it isn't".
