• Janis's system

From Nick Andre@1:229/426 to All on Thu Dec 30 08:26:09 2021
    Everyone,

With the unfortunate departure of Janis's system, there appears to be the subject of the file distribution... the filebone. I have had several Sysops Netmailing me about this.

I feel this is not my decision to make and would like to open a dialog here
of who should "take this over".

I would be willing to take this on as have been involved in the

I still have a bunch of those wonderful modems!!

How ever I am a little concerned over my age as am now 74 and may
be it should be done with a lot younger person who hopefully would
be around a lot longer :(.

    Well, I'm almost 76 -- so I'm with you! :-)

FYI, Right now there are 2 of us "Stars" -- myself (Western Star) and Mark Lewis (SouthEast Star @ 3634/12). Carol Shenkenberger has offered to step up (NorthEast Star, perhaps?) and I think it would make sense for Nick to become a star also, since he's already in the echo star business. :-)

For those unaware, the concept is that the stars receive and send to each other without looking at path lines -- if it's a duplicate file, it just gets dumped. That way, we all (3 as it was) have everything the other do and if the chain gets broken it will self-heal. There's no reason I can see to limit ourselves to 3 sites ... redundancy these days is easily handled.

In answer to someone who asked "who will take over the 'FileGate' domain", I'd answer that that was Janis' personal domain and no-one needs to "take it over".

I appear to be more in the "mass dumping ground" business since everything weird or unroutable ends up piling up here.

Fortunately, no. I'm right in town and about 250 Ft above sea level. The Fraser Valley - about an hour's drive East - was terribly damaged.
