• Weird areas.bbs type files

From Gamgee@1:103/705 to All on Wed Jul 19 21:51:50 2023
    Hello all,

This question is in regards to FidoNet usage. I have some downlinks, and lately I've noticed some strange files in ../data. I have the usual areas.bbs and associated areas.0.bbs / areas.1.bbs / etc... Those backups are caused by downlinks making changes to their feeds, which alters areas.bbs. So far, so good. But I'm also seeing files named like this:

    AREAS1G0JDF
    AREASFDpeMa
    AREASXjWNXY

I currently have *30* of these. They're of various sizes and timestamps. Some of the dates are the same dates as one of the areas.?.bbs files, but there are many of the strangely named ones on dates that don't match the backup files.

Has anyone else seen this, or know what is happening here? I'm probably going to just move them somewhere and see if anything strange happens, but wanted to check first.

    Thanks for any info.

I hadn't noticed before, but yeah, I'm seeing the same thing on my system. It's a bug. You can safelty delete the files.

Presumably, a remote area manager (areafix) request (via FTN netmail).

They're caused by a remote Areafix message to your system. In case you
missed it, DigitalMan said it was a bug and has committed a fix to
    sbbsecho.
