It is weird/unexpected that you would have node directories without a node.cnf file in them. The *nix and Windows install methods copy the contents of the node1 directory to the node[2-4] directories.
Can't speak for the author, but I've had to manually create them when I set my system to 25 nodes. Part of my docker init at start will copy a bare node to each configured node (if not present).
