    hey wouldn't it be better to have ip.can and these other files in the
    ctrl or data dir instead of where the textfiles go?

    In hindsight, yes, probably. But I also appreciate that the .msg files displayed when .can file filters something is in the same directory (e.g. name.can and name.msg).
