From Alan Beck@1:229/426.36 to all on Mon Apr 27 21:01:17 2020
    Hi,

Is there someone out there who could take me under thier wing and help me find out about the Files you can get here?

I tried a %HELP to filefix, did not work.

Could it be that my Boss Node does not allow file transfers with points.

    Cheers,

    Alan

I am not sure what files your Boss node offers to you, but if you are not getting anything, first make sure that the request actually went to the Boss node. ;) If you were using WinPoint's built-in file request feature, then the
request may have been constructed gone to 0:8/15. [See my Points Comparison guide, WinPoint CONS and the 6th item down]

Do get around it, I always contructed my file requests manually, in netmail.

Did you remember to put the password in the Subject line? Maybe there is an uppercase/lowercase issue. Maybe there was a typo.

    I doubt it.

I get the nodelist and a few other areas from 229/426.

It's been eons since I spoke with his file system but I think he uses allfix, so try sending that message to Allfix and see if you have better luck.

PMFJI, but I forgot that some systems require "Allfix" and some require "Filefix".

Allfix is possible to configure so that it answers to filefix, filemgr, tick etc..

    Just like htick as well.

Thank you Alan, I will try to fiddle with that.

I am sure I will get it.

    Hello Alan,

I have a lot of info on how to change ALLFIX, but how do I actually ask
    for the file.

In the case of file areas you don't have to ask for any files. Once you are connected to a file area you will get new files. Allfix or Filefix will tell you if you are connected or not to file areas.

I see the address of the person with the file, but I don't know how to
    get it.

In the text of the message there is perhaps "20004.zip".

How do I actually get the file?

I am connected to the AREAFIX_FILE echo.

The messages in the ALLFIX_FILE area (also FDN_ANNOUNCE and FIDO-REQ) are new file announcements of files available for request to any node. You don't need to connect any file areas to get those files. You can
"Request" those files from those nodes.

You need to get your mailer to poll a node that has the file you want and "Request" it, then wait for that node to find the file you requested and if found it will send it to you.

I can request files from a node when reading messages. I press <CTRL>F
and golded will pop up a list of filenames in the message and I can pick what files I want and a netmail will be created for that node requesting those files. Then I need to scan out messages and a request will be sent to that node and if they are found the node will send them and at the end of all that the file will be in my inbound.

Some mailers have an easy to use menu option called "request files" or "get files" on the mailer screen. I'm not sure if your mailer does but look for something like that. You need to tell your mailer somehow what files you want and from what node to get them.

    Hello,

How do I use Winpoint to download files, or do I just do it with messages?

    Steep learning curve here.

I am exploring Winpoint and OpenXP.

Hoping I can get Winpoint to do it all.

    Cheers,

    Alan

When you say download files do you mean make a file request?

    Somewhat.

My mailer supports file request on the EMSI/Telnet port, 2030 in my case.

I am not sure if WinPoint or OpenXP support an EMSI session over telnet, I think WinPoint does.

Mailers configured to do so support file requests on binkp but mine does not.

Feel free to request files here on my BBS if you would like to try it.

My EMSI/telnet mailer accepts connections at trmb.ca on port 2030. That's a non standard port so you will need to make your mailer aware of that.

    It's pretty straighforward with OpenXP.

From an existing boss node it's: Fido/Request, and pick the
boss node you want to request from.

From any other nodelisted system, just lookup the node via Fido/Nodelist/Search, then when you select a specific node, you
will have the option to initiate a File Request.
