From Alan Beck@1:229/426.36 to all on Tue Apr 21 06:32:29 2020
    Hi All,

It looks to me that WinPoint, if it behaves is a good thing for me.

OpenXP got me stumped on the compressor/uncompressor, showing me pkzip is what is needed.

So no go for that one, I don't think I can get that these days.

WinPoint seems to have matured since the last time I used it.

the message editor seems to have expanded over the whole screen overnight. That
    is odd.

It has an "Email" feel to it with a huge editor that fills the screen.

    Alot different than Golded.

At first blush I like this. The last time I used this I had problems I could not fix. Mostly from not setting it up right in the first place.

This time I did and it gracefully set it's self up.

Just -----------zip------- poll and areas showed up.

Trying OpenXP is still a good idea.

What is the editor for OpenXP?

    Cheers,

    Alan

I used it for quite many months. I received wonderful help from this echo for it. See https://kolico.ca/fidonet/echos/points/ and check out the
CONS section for WinPoint. You may encounter those issues later on.

OpenXP got me stumped on the compressor/uncompressor, showing me pkzip is
    what is needed.

You can find older pkunzip. I have unzip 5.52. But you don't need any compressor/uncompressor for OXP if you instruct your boss node to send you uncompressed pkts. Then, you only need to set Edit/Servers/Point/Edit to the following:

    ณ Upload packer <<leave blank>>
    ณ Download unpacker copy $DOWNFILE $PUFFER

Winpoint is truly a complete package with the many archiver/unarchiver formats integrated in the program.

the message editor seems to have expanded over the whole screen

Note that the editor window can be rescaled and made any size you want. Winpoint is a fine experience if you like a truly windows gui work environment.

What is the editor for OpenXP?

It's built-in. I would not know how to describe "what" the editor is, but the editing commands borrow from Wordstar and traditional editors.

It took a little getting used to learning some of the editing commands:

one can easily acquire the FOSS zip/unzip tools for pretty much any platform these days... then it is a simple matter of fixing the command line so it works
    as needed...

    Hello Alan,

OpenXP got me stumped on the compressor/uncompressor, showing me pkzip
    is what is needed.

I still have PKZ204G.EXE and PK250DOS.EXE here and a google search will find them I'm sure.

Info-Zip's zip and unzip are good also and available as 64bit if needed.

    Ttyl :-),

Yes, that's the default but it can be configured to use whatever packer/ unpacker you like.

    Yes but :)

I once tried adding a packer/unpacker but, from memory, I was unable to
    save the config.

Yes it can but unfortunately, the window size/position doesn't persist
across sessions, it always fires up maximized :(

    Agreed.

I never played with that myself. But the 5 archivers listed in Extras/ Options/Archivers are already integrated into Winpoint. What more do we really need? <g>

BTW.. I just tried "Add"ing an entry and nothing happened. :(

Another one for the CONS column.

We already covered that in the CONS for Winpoint and a workaround was [*5]
    in the footnotes.

    Sadly, there is no persistence.

Line length, as in the number of chars across? Where?

Can't we pretty much just resize the window to whatever we want?

    Yes .....

Config -> Options -> Editor -> Right Margin

Whatever value you put in there determines the maximum number of
    characters per line(default=74).

Can't we pretty much just resize the window to whatever we want?

    AhBut :)
That adjusts the window size, it does nothing for the actual line length. Assuming the right margin is set to 74 in OpenXP and the window width is
set to 70, the line length will still be 74 because the text will wrap at
    the window edge(column 70), IYSWIM :)

    That's for OXP.

This thread was about Winpoint. We were discussing Winpoint's default full-screen effect of the editor. Then you mentioned the line length can
be modified. I assumed we were still on a Winpoint trajectory. :)

WRT OXP, yes... I like the many visual adjustments that can be made with
    it.
