    From August Abolins@2:333/808.7 to F. Krueger on Sun Feb 23 01:49:24 2020
    Hello F!

The smaller window-like command window with the drop-downs is a good improvement. Since the user has to use the mouse to select the command menu anyway, it is not much more difficult activate the dropdown options. With the previous "numbered" commands I was always checking to make sure I entered the right number.

I tried the Setup option to "Change GoldEd theme", but the different numbered options did not seem to make any difference.

I forgot to mention, that it would be a good improvement if the windows stayed where the user wants them to remain during a session.

After I select "Send/Receive", my main message window resets to the upper left corner of the screen (I've dragged it down towards the middle after starting to
read messages.) And the "Menu WEB Point" command window overlays on top of the
    message window. :(

I *just* found out that I can drop to a DOS shell from GoldEd. That
takes me to C:\Points where I can see other user directories - maybe
    even edit them? :(

Anyway.. you could probably go to your own dir MartinF and edit the TPL

Yes.. and maybe even some security issues need adjustment.

    Hello Thomas, FYI..

The theme selections seem to be working now. Accessing the GoldEd .TPL
files seems to be cooperating now too.

But it may not be a good idea to allow dropping to a shell from GoldEd.
It looks like I can see and navigate anywhere from C:\Points (and
    possibly operate on those files?)

Also, a few outbound netmails still have not arrived elsewhere. Could
that be because my point number, 333/808.7, still not appear in the
    nodelist?

And a recent echomail that I wrote in POINTS about an hour ago still has
not made it outside your system.

As long as we (users) can't arbitrarily change files/directories that are
not our own, then that is reasonably safe.

I just a little test. I first checked the ownership of the files in the c:\points directory. "Welcome.txt" was assigned to \Krueger. But a "del Welcome.txt" actually deleted it. :( Ooops. Maybe I should have made
a copy of it to some other temp file first.

    Not good. :(

    A few different ideas:

    [1]

Can Golded be configured to pre-run a script/batch file BEFORE it drops to
    a DOS shell?

If so, then have that script/batch file simply go to a dummy VM where the user can't do anything harmful.

    [2]

    Can you disable/rename CMD.exe ?

    [3]

Disable access to the command prompt for all users via Group Policy?

Yes.. BUT, it doesn't appear in the webpoint environment. :(

When I enter my own name (or even your name) my 333/808.7 (or your 333/
808.8) address does not come up in the GoldEd nodelist lookup.

I don't know enough about GoldEd config to select a specific nodelist or force a nodelist recompile - if that is available to me. I already
deleted the Welcome.txt text in the c:\Points directory by mistake!

My guess it is the nodelist issue above. But new mails (echomail and netmail) from outside have not made it in the last few days either. :(

    Hi August, I corrected two problems;

the first the fact that if the user went into the dos shell he could see all the files of the system (now as soon as you try the screen is closed immediately) and then you must select function 7 to restart golded+

the second now both the pointlist and the nodelists are automatically filled in as soon as I receive them from my hub and therefore you will always find them updated.

    Thanks for your reports.

Too bad it is not possible to auto-restart GoldEd coming back out from

    UPDATE:

I discovered that we can use the DOS/Properties/Font for the GoldEd
window. The updated screenshots at the link above reflect that.

I was able to find a good combination of Font and Size that I can now work with.

Meanwhile, I noticed that you added a way to adjust the GoldEd size in one
of the Setup options. I haven't tried that yet.

I just have a suggestion for the "Menu WEB point" panel. I'll email you
    the details.

I've tried several other resolutions but none of them are
    satisfactory.

Hi Martin, I just discovered that a Right-Click on the "DOS" window gives access to the Font/Display adjustments. I'll put up a screen shot of the "size"
that works for me on my 17" monitor.

One side-effect to this is although I can approach the right font/display size I like, the GoldEd window always stays "behind" the "Menu WEB Point" control panel. I'll put up a screen-shot of that too.

I am not sure if this setting will be retained upon re-login.

In addition, if there was a way to increase the number of lines GoldEd can display that would be good. I'd like more than 25.

    I have :-))

I've set it to 85 x 35, which suits me fine.

I've also played about with the font settings and, although not perfect, it'll do for now ..... Lucida Console, 16, bold.

I've also changed the colour scheme to "10" and that's more like the

It might be a good idea to at least wait until we exit/logoff the system.

Often (and I do mean often) I tend to go back and make a change in a message after I've "saved" it. I'll browse around another echo, go to the loo, get a liquid refill, answer the phone.. and then later realize that I might like to modify the post (eg. fix an embarrassing spelling mistake) before it actually gets sent. Maybe other users fumble along like I do. LOL

Things have moved on a bit since then :)

After logging in and starting your Web Point, it is now necessary to

Prior to exiting your Web Point, it is now necessary to select "8.

Thanks for pointing that out. I was wondering why the message count hadn't changed when I knew that new messages should have arrived since last time.

Having the user explicitly select "7." for receiving (and "8." for sending) is
good procedure to get accustomed to this webpoint environment where the user is
totally responsible for processing the incoming and outgoing messages.

It is not much different when using OpenXP where we explicitly "poll" to move messages.

Hi, having the ability to manage sending and receiving independently is convenient. Another change that has been made is that sending and receiving commands for areafix are independent and do not involve sending messages that you have written and do not want to send (as per your suggestion).
