I work for a large automotive company.. who buys lots of old machines....

one comes in, from Switzerland, with an OS/2 warp based HMI

so, for the first time since I began using PC's in the early 90's I have to learn OS/2 to maintain this beast....

it' oS/2 warp 4.0... kind of neat, running custom software in the os/2 GUI type mode, with some kind of CAM type interface...

and i'll be maintaining it till the machine dies or is replaced, and they even talkked about getting a second machine... it'll be in serice probably until 2030!

I was one of those people in the 90's that *wanted* to use OS/2 but
could not afford the hardware to run it properly. So, instead I bought
and installed Windows 3.1.

Today I have OS/2 Warp 4 running in VirtualBox on my Linux desktop. I
also use Windows 10 for work only, which also runs in a virtual machine.

On OS/2 one thing I have yet to learn is how objects are used properly.
I mean, just trying to make what I would consider a shortcut on the
desktop to an application, I have not figured out without copying the
whole application to the desktop. But, I confess I have not put much
time into it since it's just for fun to tinker around with since I
couldn't back in the day. :-)

And for my Offline QWK Mail reading, I use DOSBOX-X with Blue Wave 2.3. Operating systems have become applications that allow me to run sub applications. Hahaha.

when I clicked on the icon, it just opens the Properties dialog box.
Then I was reminded of that issue to. I have the Seamonkey executable in

and gives some reasons why that might be. At least now I have it try to

I think all that does is create another EXE file. The differences
between how OS/2 and Windoes handle icons is so different that it's
hard to grasp what the right thing to do in OS/2 is.

And I only use my box around once a week, so not much practice.

On my UNIX systems (also at work) it is difficult to impossible to get a modern compliant browser, most are 10 years old now..... so they have little practical use for the desktop, but of course, as a server...... that's a whole other matter. Unix is Unix

this os/2 machine is built for one purpose and one only - CNC with CAD. The resolution sucks. The keyboard and mouse are industrial grade and more of the kind you'd find on an old teletype or minicomputer. The OS/GUI is very wierd i'm not used to it) and most of the OS is hidden from view. But it's very clearly os/2 to any seasoned user.

The Ethernet is AUI (15 pin!) and also has a parallell port.... which limits what I can do with it - to network this i'd need a transciever (can still buy new) but THEN i'm stuck with NETBIOS/NETBEUI for a protocol and needing windows XP as a go between...

so.... floppies it is (yes, has floppies)

other than os/2 used on machines (some bank machines , etc) or the absolutely latest os/2 builds i'd be curious what else you can do...

also can os/2 dual boot with DOS? I could try it on this laptop...

For me, pure nostalgia. I have no practical use for it today. It is just
fun to look back on something I admired in the past and wanted but never purchased and used anyway. I was a DOS/Windows user mostly. Today my
main desktop is Linux on both my laptops and my desktop. I use other
OS's as needed/wanted in virtual machines on top of Linux.

aaah.. well.. for me, none... I used os2 only once when I was at college, in the lab. not much time after, even the few machines that had os2 became winnt... and so, playing with os2 today, for me, would be just for a nostalgia of a cool time that will never come back - and use parts of the system I even didndt' have time to use by then :)
