Hello All.

i need some tips to debug a strange freezing issue with my os2 install.

i have os2 warp server v4.52 cp with some fixpacks, but the problem is
without fixpacks. i have moved my bbs from a single cpu board to a dual
p166. i've fully reinstalled the OS, but on the new board its freezes from
time to time. i have tested the RAM with memtest86. i have changed most of
the hardware, for which i had spares, but the problem presits the: the
system hangs. it is totally random, the uptime can be from 1 hour
to 7 days. do you have any tools which logs the I/O or CPU and processes?
how do you debug an os2? :)

I had issues running eCS 1.2MR with the SMP pack on a Dual Xeon system; I ended up having to drop back to the uni-processor kernel to get it to be stable. I'm not positive that it was OS/2's fault, as that system died shortly after that change was made. I intended to attempt getting that machine going again, but ended up having to scavenge the power supply from it to fix another machine.

At some point I will replace the power supply and see if I can get it to run again, but it's really low on the priority list at the moment. I am testing ArcaOS in a VM, and will probably replace eCS 2.2 beta on my OS/2 BBS machine shortly.

That's definitely an issue. I have run SIO 1.60d for years without issues but I know plenty of peoplw who can't run that version on their hardware without having odd problems.

I haven't looked recently but there were two binkd*.exe files in the archive at one time. They looked the same and they may have had the same length but they were different, they had different dependecies.

Tommi Koivula has recent builds that he does himself at 2:221/360. I think they are available there with the magic name binkd. If you haven't already you could give those a try.

Not that 0.9.2 is bad in any way.. :)

Those binkd files are available at 2:221/360 as binkd2.rar and binkd2e.rar. The contents of those files look the same but I don't think they are.

They both depend on libc066 also available there as libc066.zip.

A bit off-topic but I set up OpenVPN on a Raspberry Pi 3B so I can VNC into my BBS securely. I don't have that set up right now but looking at doing it again for secure remote access.

Nice to see the ancient one works. :) However, I think the build version is not relevant, it is how and with what compiler it has been compiled. Also different libc*.dll versions may cause a mess. I stopped compiling other versions than the klibc version that runs fine in my WSEB 4.52 CP2 system. But no warranty. ;)

It could also be the driver/hardware causing issues as well. I used to
run my BBS under Arca on a dell desktop, everything sorta fine, BBS
traffic was fine and I had no issues but sometimes FTP or VNC would
just crash it hard, freeze up and require hard reboot.

That machine finally had some other (HD) issues and I replaced it with
a slightly more compatible Lenovo desktop, Since then I have not see
FTP or VNC freeze or crash once. So network driver/hardware could be
the issue as well.

Also, what do you use for SRIF processing with BinkD?

I use mfreq here on my linux box to handle requests. I haven't tried the OS/2 version but I have seen an OS/2 version 3.17 around and about. mfreq supports SmartMagic that works nicely to send a requester the latest file from a file area. That's handy in areas like fidonews or nodelist when filenames change frequently.

IMHO, Allfix died when Harald stopped the development.

I tried to upgrade my Allfix to newer versions few times, but no success. Maybe a setup from scratch might work, but I see no reason to do that. The last version from Harald works quite fine. (ALLFIX/2 for OS/2 Warp, v6.00.018 09-Jul-00 14:20)

I'll look and see if I can find that version of ALLFIX. I am using NEF and it works great but having the SRIF and filefind functions would be handy. I'm cleaning up 20 years worth of mess on the BBS and finding stuff I didn't realize I still had anymore. I have 18GB worth of files and am adding more when I have time.

I found several half-finished BBS doors hiding. I am working on porting my development environment so I will be able to provide DOS, OS/2, Win32 and Win64, Linux, and WINserver-native doors from the same code. I have Windows 7, Windows 10, FreeDOS, Devuan Linuxs, OS/2 Warp 4.52 and ArcaOS 5.0.6 virtual machines I built just for testing purposes. Life is good. <G>

I just found an ATI Radeon X600 dual-head PCI video card in my "junk pile" I am sticking in my up-and-coming BBS server (a HPE ProLiant ML110 G6) so I can do development much easier with dual monitors.

Side question: what are you using for your NNTP gate on your BBS?

Side question: what are you using for your NNTP gate on your BBS?

I run JamNNTPd to access JAM msg bases via NNTP.
I also run Soupgate to gate usenet to fido.
