Well, I got cited by Code Enforcement for having the
lawn too high. With being allergic to stinging insects,
having heat intolerance (I can sunburn in 10 minutes),
and now after hernia surgery, can't lift heavy items
(such as a lawn mower), I'm screwed.

Can't you ask some kids in the neighborhood to do it for a few
    bucks?

If worse comes to worst, I'll shut the BBS down, and just
use a Wi-Fi card when I have to do ham radio
    communications...that'd save nearly $100 a month.

I avoided paying over $150/mo by turning the lights off at my
shop during the covid lockdown. I also avoided using any
propane (for heating) during March and April. It was worth it.

I had to cancel a testapel implant, and go back to shots,
because of the cost. I've been eating only 1 meal a day
as it is (much to the consternation of my PCP), so I
guess I have to fast and starve now. I do need to lose
weight, but that's not the way to do it.

One meal per day is a bad strategy. You are not doing your
body any favors that way, especially if your one meal consists
of bread, starches and sugar. Ideally, you should try to
maintain the glucose levels steady, hour by hour. I find that
on average, 100-125 cals per waking hour works good for me and
    I never feel hungry.

I was between 195 and 200 lbs for many years up until 2 years
ago. In Jan 2019 I reached 175 lbs. There was a bit of an
upswing to 180 6 months ago, but I have reached 172 a few
weeks ago now. Based on my BMI, I have a few more pounds to
lose. It's nice to have a flat stomach for a change.

So, I'm not a happy camper right now. I feel like the T-
shirt with an angry vulture on it, that noted "Patience,
my [butt]...I'm going to kill something".

That is fine for the vulture. That's its nature, to survive.
    Humans have many other choices.

If my middle name, J.D. (my late father's name) stood for
"Jack Daniels", and I was into drinking, I'd be going
after it, or the Jamaica White Rum..

If you want to add liver damage to your already long list of
ailments, that's your choice, but it probably won't make you
    happy.

At home I only use lights when needed. When I leave a room that light

I am contracted security for the university here and man do they waste electric.

I generally eat only one meal a day and have for years.

I will sometimes not eat a meal for two days. Not total fasting, but
just no sit down meal. A bite of this and later a bite of that. I can drop a couple of pounds quickly.
Last year on vacation I was staying with a friend and her friend asked if
I were hungry. They couldn't believe me when I said "No, I just ate yesterday". I was around them for four days and knew I hadn't eaten anything.

I am also active. I don't have a car (live downtown) and either walk or

    August,

12 x 1150 usd is a lot more than I've ended up in my pocket
    some recent years.

It basically is the same I got when I was still able to work...
first at Burger King, then with the Arkansas Office Of Emergency
    Services, then in silkscreen printing.

Can't you ask some kids in the neighborhood to do it for a few
    bucks?

The guy from Code Enforcement referred me to a nice black
gentleman, who I told I could pay him $100. He said at first
he was going to charge $50, but, then did it free. He is going
to be my new yard man. During the day, he's an RN with one of
the local area rheumatologists...and he used to work for my
rheumatologist. I was praying down blessings on him and his
    family.

I avoided paying over $150/mo by turning the lights off at my
shop during the covid lockdown. I also avoided using any
propane (for heating) during March and April. It was worth it.

Well, I'm hoping to put the BBS in the cloud this fall. That way,
I wouldn't have to shut it down during thunderstorms, more common
than power or internet outages...and I wouldn't worry about getting
a generator. The price on those commercials is just for the generator itself...it doesn't include installation.

The thing is, I started that while being caregiver for my Mom,
when I had to first put her in the hospital, then in a nursing home.
The one she ended up was in Lonoke, about an hour east of Little
Rock, and it was "cheaper" than being in the Little Rock area...but,
the average cost of a nursing home in Arkansas is $5500 a month. I
had Arkansas Asset Protection Group help with becoming her Power
Of Attorney, and getting all her assets into a Miller Trust. I was
deeded the house and her car, and my brother was deeded his land
and property, so since she had nothing when she died, there was no
need for probate court. To qualify for Medicaid, you have to have
    under $2000 in assets...or it's "self pay".

Besides trying to save money, the stress made it where I wasn't
hungry in the morning (I *RARELY* eat breakfast), and once I have
a big meal at lunch, I'm satisfied the rest of the day. I had to
give up the diet green tea for the caffeine, and go flavored water.
I've practically given up the sodas and chocolate, for the oxylates
that lead to kidney stones. Plus, in the evening, when I'm doing my
ham radio traffic nets, I don't have time to eat...but I don't like
to be "a bad ham, and go to bed without supper". :P

I think of the joke from the late Red Skelton (I can relate!!).
His wife told him "if you don't lose weight, I'm going to make you
wear one of my girdles!!". As the audience is laughing, Red said
"I know what you dear ladies go through!!".

Well, his wife didn't say anything to him for 2 weeks, and he
goes into the bathroom, and sees this thing on the door. He goes
into a pantomime of putting this thing on like a diaper. He is
sweating like a horse under the hot stage lights, and the entire
    hall is roaring in laughter!!

His wife walks in, and asks "What Are You Doing??!!".

He laments (out of breath)..."Ok, Honey...you win. I'll lose
    weight!!".

To which, she screams "You take off my hot water bottle!!". It
    brought the house down!! <BG>

That is fine for the vulture. That's its nature, to survive.
    Humans have many other choices.

I'm feeling the same way...trying to survive.

If you want to add liver damage to your already long list of
ailments, that's your choice, but it probably won't make you
    happy.

Thankfully, I never was into tobacco or alcohol. I don't see how
folks afford it. My late wife would have "a rum and Coke" once in
a blue moon, when she felt "puny". It was 1% rum, and 99% Coke. It
would knock her out until the next morning, but she was fine.

Just for grins, we stopped by a liquor store, to see what a
bottle of Jamaica White Rum (she was born in Kingston), and we
about flipped when we saw the price. So, in talking to her Mom
and Dad, I asked why it was so expensive. They said one word:
    "Imported".

My mother-in-law passed away 3 weeks ago. Their daughter was
their only child (and my wife)...and it's hard to say who took
her death the hardest. But, I have all the wonderful memories
that no one can take away...yet, I'm glad she's not here to see
    me suffer now.

She knew of my 3 hobbies...she and my Dad were square dancing
2 1/2 years before I got into it (I regret I waited so long).
Her late brother was the only other ham radio operator in the
family. He knew I was first licensed, but didn't live to see me

Well, I had wanted to do a long train trip, just to get away
from things for a week. But, declining health and financial
issues have made that "a no-go".

My late wife and I never had kids...because she didn't want any,
and because after a severe case of chicken pox over 40 years ago
(that nearly went into encephalitis), then working around (and
likely absorbing solvents like methyl-ethyl-ketone) for nearly 20
years...as my late wife so eloquently put it (she had a way with
words), "they wouldn't spay me, so he volunteered to get neutered".
<G> She had a Bachelors and a Masters Degree in Psychology, and I
should've known better than to mess with her. One night, I said "My
head is so far up my butt, that I can see my throat". Without missing
a beat, grinning wryly, she said "That's why your eyes are brown"!!

That's what I've been told as well. But probably collusion between the insurance and electric companies. :)

    Joe,

My sleep isn't for beauty's sake. I gave that up long ago.
Besides, you can verify that fact. :P

    Absolutely.
Maybe you could go into a coma or something....

While sleep and I have a loving relationship, L. Armclock, and N. Somnia
(the jealous whores) are trying to break us up. <G>

I don't rest well at night, and usually need about a 45 minute power nap
    in the afternoon.

Is a coma the mother of a co?? Or a shortened, paused, punctuation mark??

Yes, I'm being difficult, but it's time for me to be in another one of
my nether moods. And, if I wasn't here, the echo would be awfully boring.

Then I have trouble getting to sleep later.

    Yes, I'm being difficult,

When I took my trips the last couple of years I always liked too stop somewhere along the way and wander about. Usually every couple of hours or whenever something caught my fancy.
Small towns were the best since things to see.
At one point in my life I was a hurry to get wherever I was going and not wanting to stop. If there was something to see I thought "next time".
Now I enjoy stopping since I may not be that way again.

I wonder if it, or another app, would let you pick the particular highway
you want to travel. Like, "I want to travel the roundabout route that keeps
me on US 60 to..." I have tried to fool google maps and mapquest into
doing that by turning the interstates off, but they usually will still try
to pick routes that don't follow the road I want to stay on.

Granted if I want to stay on that route, I just follow the signs and not
any directions, but I would like for those apps to tell me how long the
    trip should take. :)

Same here. But the interstates generally parallel the old roads.
I recall several times on my trip last year I would be RT 66 and just off
to the side was I 40 (?). It was bumper-to-bumper, 80+ mph, full of semi's and I was the only one on 66, cruising along around 50 mph and enjoying the ride.
I did like putting in a search "driving time from X to Y" and that would
give a general idea. It followed the interstate and I just added some time, depending on the distance and terrain. A hour here, an hour there, etc.
Google maps came in handy when I stopped for the night.
I would write on a sheet of paper things like "(RT) X to Y, then
left/right, etc. That way I could quickly glance at the sheet for directions rather
    than looking at a map.
Its almost impossible to find state maps any longer, like they used to
    give away in gas stations.
However, once in a while I would have to take an interstate and would
stop at visitors centres and get a map for that state.
The only visitor centre I can recall on an old road was in Arkansas
leaving Louisiana. I was really surprised to find that.
I prefer paper maps, you can lay then out and plan a route a lot easier
    than on a screen.

Depending on where you were, 40 does parallel old 66 through places like Oklahoma and points West. In other places, like Illinois, I think it is
    I-55 or 57.

I did like putting in a search "driving time from X to Y" and that would give a general idea. It followed the interstate and I just added some time, depending on the distance and terrain. A hour here, an hour there, etc.

That is how I usually try to do it. I only have real issues when the route
I want to take runs several miles away from the Google-suggested route.

I prefer maps, too. Google and Mapquest are sometimes good for zooming
into areas to find surface roads. I use paper maps and internet maps and usually type out an itenerary that includes the RT X 6 mi, Left on Y type instructions.

I'm not one for Mexican food.

I trashed my brother out earlier today. He said that their large dinner
plate of spaghetti and meatballs with meat sauce, is 3 meals for him. So,
I ordered an appetizer of 8 garlic cheese sticks, then two slices of Texas Toast, and that huge plate of spaghetti...and devoured all of it, plus a
slice of lemon icebox pie for good measure, and washed it all down with
    2 glasses of sweet tea.

After calling me "Dumpster Daryl" for putting all those groceries
away, he paid me $10...to which I gave to our waitress as a tip. He
said "If you order and eat a meatball sub, I'll give you an additional
    $5 -- I said I wanted $100". <G>

The place is Grady's Pizza And Subs, and I think they're just in
central Arkansas. Regardless, I was satisfied, and not overly stuffed.
But, I won't need anything else to eat until lunch tomorrow.

Portions of US 70 in central Arkansas, especially between Little Rock and Memphis, run south of Interstate 40...and were also just south of the former Rock Island railroad. Union Pacific still uses the segment between Brinkley, Arkansas and Memphis, Tennessee...but the segment from Galloway (just east
of North Little Rock) to Brinkley is gone. Some small towns still have the depots, and a small section of track...but the rest has been converted to trails, or is gone altogether. The depots have been repurposed for places
like the local Chamber of Commerce (Lonoke) to an insurance business (Hazen).

In the Little Rock area, just west of Central High School (where the 1957 desegregation crisis was), the former Rock Island line now heads toward the former Missouri Pacific line southwest of Little Rock National Airport...
going through the former Biddle Yard. The MP line now heads toward Pine Bluff...where it meets the former Cotton Belt line from St. Louis and Jonesboro to the northeast...then Tyler, Texarkana, and Camden, to the southwest.

Also, the former Rock Island northwest of Little Rock is now owned by a shortline railroad, running through Perry to Danville. West of Danville, to
the Oklahoma line, the tracks were taken up long ago. A lonely grade crossing signal at Belleville stands guard "for trains that will never pass that way again".

Its almost impossible to find state maps any longer, like they used
to give away in gas stations.

I'm not sure if you can order them through the state highway departments anymore.

    Joe,

    My tea is unsweetened.

Heretic!! To the stake with you, and get the fire lit!! :P

May I have a glass of unsweetened iced tea first?

I'll do what Leroy Van Dyke (who wrote the song "The Auctioneer"
in the late 1950's) told Bill Anderson in response to his question
of "How do you stay looking so young??". He replied sarcastically
that "My wife puts formaldehyde in my coffee every morning". <BG>

He was then told that "It must be nice to have a family member
who is a doctor". He replied "My brother is a doctor, but he does
    not do a thing for me...he's a gynecologist". <BG>

I have a limit of three cups of coffee. After that, no matter who
makes it, it begins to taste like liquid rubber.

I'm not sure if it's a diuretic like tea...but if it is, the way
I've seen some people drink it, they're making repeated potty runs.

Take a sip and go, take a sip and go.

That's because the cold weather makes ones urinary bladder shrink.
And, that's for both men and women.

I think of the joke where Momma has potty trained her daughter
(all of us have to go through it, when we're young and old...as
success is not peeing in your pants <G>). They would travel in
the summer, and stop off at interstate highway rest stops for a
picnic lunch (this was long before you had to worry about predators
    and perverts frequenting these places).

Anyway, she taught her daughter to look for the LONGER sign...
WOMEN versus MEN. This was the case until they got to a certain
rest area, and it was LADIES and GENTLEMEN (guess which one is
    longer?? <G>).

Well, the little girl walks into the men's room, and here's
this little boy, naked as a jaybird, and she sees his member,
and asks "What are you doing?? What have you got there??". After
he tells her, she says "Boy!! That's a handy thing to have along
    at picnics!!".

I would've loved to have seen the look on her Momma's face
    when she told her!! <G>

I likely have told this before...but I wish all jokes were
    this cute.

When I was on my trip last year I arrived in this one town and called my hosts to tell them I had arrived.
I got a "not in service" message on the phone when I called.
When I got to their place there was no answer when I rang the bell. The curtains were also drawn tight.
Standing on the door step I could have sworn I saw a curtain move
slightly and thought "They are probably peeking out and whispering if they stayed
very quiet I would go away. :)
We did eventually get together and I told them this and the reply was
that was plan all along. :)

    Ed,

I had no idea what any of the laws of thermodynamics were about.

Basically, it means that in this lifetime, sooner or later, everything
will fail, break down, or fall apart. In short, it's the law of entropy.

You're getting too "high tech" for Me when You put something like that
    in a Tagline.

I've got several I acquired from the late Nancy Backus. She hasn't been
gone that long, but she is sorely missed.

YES! I try to be a good Tagline Thief.

And, one doesn't need to worry about going to jail for it. :)

Had to split up the link to make sure all of it would fit in this
    message.

I have to do the same with long links when I post the Amateur Radio
Newsline to several ham radio related echoes. But, I try to split them
up into 4 parts. Some older BBS message software, etc. barfs at over 100
    lines in a message.

Back when I was in High School I had a class about Physics but couldn't remember what Thermodynamics was about or even it the class covered that subject ... so I searched on DuckDuckGo for:

    second law of thermodynamics

and this link was in the results page:

Had to split up the link to make sure all of it would fit in this message.

I still don't know much about Thermodynamics after reading about it.

Really. I still like the one with Maxine of Crabby Road (she loves her attitude problem), where folks are complaining about her running around
her house nude...and she replies "you shouldn't be looking in the windows".

(It was the a/c vent blowing that made the curtain move).
