    Nice. :)

I have been one step behind a lot of the protests and all.
Never saw anything until Richmond, then decapitated statues, missing statutes, vandalized statutes and pedestals, etc.
I saw the missing Columbus in Richmond. I was taking a side trip and stopped to get my bearings and noticed people taking pictures. I assumed, of course, at first they were just some of my fans.
Then I realised I was parked right beside it and near the lake the
    statue was thrown into.
Yesterday in Portsmouth a road was closed and seemed that was the statue that was pulled down and the guy got hit in the head when a statue to decapitated. At least this what another fella taking pictures told me.
I've run into no problems on the trip.
    Feel perfectly safe.
Today is Norfolk then turn north to Yorktown tomorrow.

Staying pretty much to your itinerary, then... :)

    Pretty much.
The sites I was intending to see where open public areas, state/national parks, etc. Between the political unrest and Covid I had to deal with fewer crowds and never had to hunt for a place to park, etc.
There were only two places I didn't get to visit.
The road to Jamestown was closed and after walking along the road for a
good distance I asked a man coming back what was at the end of the road and told nothing, it was all closed off. So I turned around and left.
I could see way off in the distance the reconstructed town, the three
ships in port, etc but no way to get there. And too far for a photo.
The next bust was Mt Vernon, which has a tall brick wall around it and
had to pay to see even the exterior which the state of VA had closed.
The last one was Arlington National Cemetery which was closed "due to political unrest".
Gettysburg was huge! After about 90 minutes of wandering about I broke
down and drove the rest of the tour. Lots of monuments to soldiers from
    NYS. :)
I changed the last part of my trip when I couldn't get hold of the
person I planned to visit in Pittsburgh so headed toward home and stumbled across
Antietam. Didn't know I was even near it.
There was a panoramic tower to view the battle site, erected in 1893,
but it was, of course, closed. I would have loved to have seen the field that way.
Then it was on to home and got back around 6.30 Friday.
Since I had a car I made the most of yesterday running a lot of errands.

I'm an early to bed, early to rise type person. I still don't have that wealthy and wise part down yet. :)
I was generally up before 5 or 5.30 and start my day around 6.
Many was the day I was well on the road by 7.
Then around 2 or 3 start looking for a place for the night.
If one gets to a motel around 3, which is generally the earliest to get a room without reservations, one can generally easily get a room.
In larger towns and cities I used booking.com to find a reasonably priced room near where I was and could book it in as little as a few minutes before check in.
I like that site since it lists options in price, location, gives a description of any amenities, etc.
If I were just driving along around that time and saw some nice little mom-and-pop place I stopped. Those folks can use the business.
So many people drive past them for some name brand motel.

    Joe,

I worked 7-3 shift for years and got in the habit of being up early
to check the overnight news and email. I got into the habit (one of my few good ones) of those hours.

Well, with monthly B-12 shots, and weekly testosterone shots in the gleute (the expression "they shoot horses, don't they??" comes to mind <G>), and
with the offices only doing labs or shots in the morning, I have to be up
early on Wednesdays. Shall we say, "I get cheeky with the nurses" <EG>

Many is the time I awaken between 4 and 5.30 and go on and get up.

Unless I have to be up (such as nature calling at the most inopportune
time), I usually turn over, and go back to sleep. When I was able to work,
when with the Arkansas Office Of Emergency Services, at the area National Weather Service, my favorite shift was the "graveyard" (overnight). I could
do my hobbies in the evening, go to work, then take care of doctors appointments, shopping, etc. in the morning, and not have to take a day
    off of work.

BUT, on weekends when I'm working I "sleep in" till around 6 since I
can do all that while I'm hard at work warming a chair. :)

You must be worn out from that hard work <g,d,r>.
