I managed to break that somehow (after years of use) and had to go with the filter one.

Ooh, that one sounds interesting; do you recall anything about it? brand, name, etc?

The one I use now is a Melitta, I paid $2.99 for at the mall years ago. I
got two, one to replace the one I broke and one as a spare, that's been
sitting on the shelf since then.

Usually, I don't add that extra 'spice' to my coffees, as I like coffee itself just fine.

I like my coffee straight, just black.
I got a coffee at some FF place once and ordered it black. The woman at
the counter asked if I wanted cream in it. No, just black. Sugar? No, just black.

they gave you a thermosful on the table so you could get 4 refils or so without the waitress' attention needed.

What I hate is when I have a mouthful of food the server will ask a
question and all I can do is shake my head.
And it happens no matter were I am eating.

Normally, I'd come in the door in the morning, at my usual time

I've never been a breakfast eater. Just not hungry in the mornings as a rule.

if I wanted it; I asked "Is it union?"; he said of course, & I said
    no thanks,

I was a member of a union only once and hated it.
I worked for a few months at a Kroger in the produce department. All employees had to join the union after 30 days. No one other than a manager were full time. One would to be getting close to 39 hours when a manager came by telling them to leave.
Some people were working only four hours a week. Just enough to pay
your union dues and nothing much else.
