But for hourly workers, if they had to work that week

One can always tell when a holiday is near on campus.
Faculty and higher ups will go to lunch a day or two before the holiday
and "forget" to go back to work till its over. Meanwhile the little "worker bees" are still on the job. :)

This is on a volunteer basis. Never mind they are making like time and a half those days.

Volunteering for time and a half??

There is some (state workers) rule they can't be forced (scheduled) to
work those days. But to make sure someone is there, if only for a little while, such as the housekeepers, time and half is an incentive.

That's true...but then they take out more in taxes.

If one does OT once a week, for example, the amount of extra tax is
hardly noticed. Its the one who work OT on a regular basis.
A co-worker years ago worked all the OT she could get, saying she was
making more money that way. I told her she was also paying more in taxes.
I suggested she work OT one week and not the next and compare the taxes
    on her pay stub.
After that she didn't work that much OT. :)

I think of the country-western song "Why don't you mind your own
business, so you won't be mindin' mine??". Too many people would
rather tell you what to do, than keep their own house in order.

Some of us are so busy telling others what to do we don't have the time
to take care of our own house. :)

My house is clean enough to be healthy, and dirty enough to be happy.
And, the house was clean last week...sorry you missed it. <G>

24 to be exact...although that number changes twice a year at the
