Very good! I had no idea that it was made into a film, 1944.

Today a simple google with "laura mystery film" would bring you
closer to the author's name. I made this quiz too easy!

I'm going to check out the film for comparison. Apparently
Vincent Price plays a role in it.

I just finished watching the film last night. It is NOT very
    good imho.

All the actors seem to be playing thespian (like they are in a
stage play) ...their expressions and delivery seem to be overly
    dramatic most of the time.

The lead actor (who plays the investigator) and the Laura
actress scaled things back and were OK.

Vincent Price was terrible and unconvincing. His role was the
gigolo (fee male, <g>) ..but he seemed like an overgrown
    teenager.

Which reminds me of the time I played the boyfriend of the man-
hungry Blanche in an episode of the Golden Girls when I was
visiting Disney World in the MGM theme park in Orlando some
years ago. First, they asked for volunteers, and then they had
scouts come into the audience to pull people from the crowd. I
slinked low and inconspicuous as I could, but they picked me. I
was actually nervous, but it was fun how they pulled it off. I
wish I had a copy of the tv-episode that they replicated. I
    looked pretty good on TV!

I have seen many movies that people would rave about being the best ever,
etc and think "What's the big deal?"
And don't get me started on critics. I have found any film they pan I
rather enjoy and the ones they bragged about was nothing/seldom anything special.

Always liked Clifton Webb's character. Webb was a bit over the top with
    his acting.

Vincent Price was terrible and unconvincing.

At times Vincent Price was a bit a hammy. To me that was part of his
    style.

Cool. A celeb in our midst.
I am in a old time radio mail group and at one time we had Michael
Gwynne as a member. He was in a lot of radio and tv shows, playing both good guys and bad guys. Never a big name, but believable in his roles.
I think Golden Girls, which I always liked, videos are floating around
    the net.
My civilian boss a few years was nearly a double for Bea Arthur in looks
    and personality.

I have had the same experience with some films. But this one
was NOT as effective as the book. In the book, you get a much
better sense of his growing obsession with the missing Laura. In
the film, there is far too much of going for the booze and
"wanna cigarette?" to fill in the apparently moody and
thoughtful moments that would be "explained" in the book.

Dana Andrews (the investigator) was cool and played the
character with restraint. Gene Tierny has a beautiful profile -
among other things. But Webb, kinda overdid some scenes.

Vincent Price was terrible and unconvincing.

At times Vincent Price was a bit a hammy. To me that was

True. But he found his niche in horror films in the 50's. I
forgot that he was in Edward Scissorhanads - a fine film that
takes advantage of his type-casting as an evil man, yet played
in a film that is basically a comedy and caters to the hammy
    style that you mention.

My civilian boss a few years was nearly a double for Bea
    Arthur in looks and personality.

I have identified several people in my town that could pass as
doubles for celebs. Myself, I would say that the Canadian
novelist Peter Robinson resembles me, but he's about 8 years
older than me and more overweight.

Movies seldom follow the book they are based on.
Plus, in a book it will take paragraphs to explain something that in a
film is a look/glance, movement, etc, is all it takes to convey the situation.

True. But he found his niche in horror films in the 50's.

A lot of A and B actors of the '30s and '40s wound up doing horror type films. Films they wouldn't have touched during "their day".
Price always seemed the perfect fit for just about every part he played.
He could be witty and charming, or sinister. Sometimes both at once.
He really hammed it in the Hammer Poe movies. (Often with those the only part of Poe that was used was the title).
He, Boris Karloff and Peter Lorre were always good in whatever part they
had in those and could really let go and let the ham fly, with a wink and a nod. :)

Myself, I would say that the Canadian novelist Peter Robinson resembles me

I used to be mistaken for Tom Cruise and later Matt Damon, but I kept
telling everyone no, I'm taller than they are. :)
