• Finding Deleted Files

From Ed Vance@1:2320/105 to Joe Mackey on Thu Jan 9 06:44:00 2020
    Howdy! Joe,

I was thinking the other day about Your message about the missing
Notes files and wondered if You tried any Undelete programs to learn
if they could be found and make them "Readable" again.

I know those files have been missing for a long time so they might not
be in the computer's Recycle Bin.

I use a program called Recuva from www.piriform.com/recuva to find
files that I didn't mean to Delete and Undelete them.

Recuva has to be ran from the Administrator Account.

Another 'trick' I use to locate missing files on this XP pc is to
go to a CMD Prompt by clicking:

Start - Programs - Accessories - Command Prompt

    OR

Start - Programs - Accessories _ hold the Mouse Pointer over Command Prompt

then Right Click and select Runas.
(Select the Administrative Account to find every file on the pc)

    Then typing:

cd\ (to go to the Root Directory)

dir/s/-p (to make a list of all of the files on the computer)
(it will take a L-O-N-G T-I-M-E to finish)
    (be patient)

After that is finished type the same line but add Redirection to store
the Results in a Text File:

    dir/s/-p >> c:\Some SubDirectory Name\filename.txt
    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

(Type in where You want the file to go to so that it cam be
    (Opened in Notepad later)
(preferrably NOT in the ROOT Directory)

(This won't take as long of a time as the first line did)

    Then type:

exit (to return to the Windows GUI)

Open Notepad and then click File - Open - (the location the new file is at)

In Notepad click: Edit - Find
(enter the FileName of one of a file You are wanting to find)

Hopefully You can find some of the Long Lost Files either in the
Recycle Bin, or with Recuva or the Full Directory Listing.

I hope I'm not telling You about things You already know,
I sure don't want to hurt Your feelings by acting like I'm a MKIA
    (Mister Know-It-All).

You already know I ain't MKIA (I just act that way).

    Good Luck, 73 de Ed W9ODR . .

Well first, I would need to find the deleted PC they were on. :)
I've gone through a couple of PC's since 2000. And at that time they
were permanently stored on a floppy, then burned to a CD. That CD failed.
Part of the problem was the burning program itself. I can't recall the
name but it say a file had been successfully burned only to find out later no it hadn't.
I use Nero now and that's the best one around.
I have CyberLink that comes with Windows as a back up program.
    Thanks anyway.

If the PC is deleted, it no longer exists.

It has long been recycled into something else. :)
Years ago my pc doctor would buy up old pc's that Marshall sold in yard

The first computer for The Thunderbolt BBS was a 32nd birthday
present. Arkansas Children's Hospital was upgrading their computers, and discarding the old ones. A friend of my brothers (I didn't know him at
the time) got me an 8088 XT, with 640K of RAM, a 20 Megabyte Hard Drive,
    a 3.5" and a 5.25" floppy drive, a keyboard, a mouse, DOS 3.2, and a
monochrome green monitor (with screen burn), for free.

At one time I thought green monitors were really something else.
With my Commie I used a 13" tv with a switcher.
I thought green was the latest and most up-to-date thing around. :)
