I have no control if a moderator wishes to keep a dead area running.

I can control if it is listed at 2:25/0,1 or 250/1.

At some point and once I have managed to find code that can read Jam message bases I will start checking for volumes for each area and record such on the echo's record that in turn can be reported on.

Then it is up to the star systems to drop it or not.

As mbse does not produce similar I would make use of such a facility and clear out the dead wood.

    but that is me :)

Yes.. I know this. ELIST + robot is a fine way to birth an echo and get
it "published" for announcement via the .NA file

However, the traffic in many of them is the key for success though.

At some point and once I have managed to find code that can read Jam message bases I will start checking for volumes for each area and
record such on the echo's record that in turn can be reported on.

Unless there is one system that processes or stores messages from every
echo in the .NA, there will never be a true account of message traffic.

Janis' system produces a very useful sorted list by name and by volume and
    is published in the Fidogazette.

Then it is up to the star systems to drop it or not.

As mbse does not produce similar I would make use of such a facility and clear out the dead wood.

Some echos should be just "let go".

My system gets the bulk of them from Janis and as far as I know get all of fido
area plus some others but only English based one's as my system could not display content anyway.

True and in years distant past they did when echos and files where distributed by the major region star type systems.

As Sysops have left with others taking over the slack these processes seem to have stopped.

With Cvd19 running and most of us at home, I expected that some areas would come back to life but sadly that is not the case and as you say they should be let go.

That's already being done over in the STATS echo. Janis Kracht posts that information in the FidoGazette also.

She is running BBBS which I believe uses JAM for its message base ... maybe she could help you?

I've just replied to Vince in netmail about this... but no, BBBS doesn't use JAM, it uses a proprietary format for it's message areas.

I use a switch on bbbs to generate the "raw stats" for each area, sort the areas, then run a formula using awk and sort on those stats to generate what you see in the FidoGazette.

    Take care,
    Janis

Okay, thanks for the correction. Not sure why I thought BBBS used JAM...

Ah, okay, that makes sense. I do have a nice utility for Squish that does a lot of that type of statistics gathering but it's meant more for billing than just general usage.
