I don't think the MultiMail author regular visits DOVE-Net, so that is anyone's guess. As for SyncTERM support of brand new Mac platform, I wouldn't hold your breath. Unless some gifts a new Mac to Deuce or myself or anyone else with the skills and interest to work on it shows up, it's unlikely to happen.

Apple Macs using Apple Silicon will run any software compiled for Intel based Macs. They precompile a translated version of the program on install using what Apple calls "Rosetta 2". The same process was used during the transition from PowerPC to Intel many years ago.

You can read more about it here: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/apple_silicon/about_the_rosetta_trans lation_environment

Was your subject (Sillicon) like on purpose? Apple forcing a CPU change isn't new (PowerPC, rip), but last time it took a while before they made it so you HAD to run the app in x86/Intel mode.

Is Apple planning to go cold turkey, like if you buy a new Sillycon Mac it flat out will not work with Intel based applications?

I'd wager you could still run Syncterm on a new Mac, but it'd be in emulated Intel mode or something.

If there's build tooling to support the ARM based macs, would be more
suprised to see it unsupported... that said, they may dive all in on
requiring signed software for installation, which may introduce hurdles.

Probably, or used... the new M1 Mac Mini is still about $200 overprised ($699), and they want another $200 to go from 256gb storage to 512gb.

Apparently it'll take a while for emulation/virtualization to shake out
and you can only do emulation or virtualization in a single process, not
    both.

And afaik, looks like I was write about locking down booting to signed
images only (no linux). And with the custom chips, homebrew mac is

I found out about that today before reading this post. I might end up using a System 76

Not sure if this is still true or not but, back when I was shopping for a
linux laptop in 2015, the Zareason laptops seemed to be somewhat more reasonably priced and more customizable at order time than the System 76
    ones did.

I bought a Zareason and have been happy with it since.

I got a discount coupon for one of those thinkpads that come with Fedora pre-installed (from Linux Magazine). I think it is this one:

    https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptop/thinkpad/thinkpad-x1/X1-Carbon-Gen-/p/20U9C TO1WWENUS2/customize

I think with the THINKPROMO code the price gets cut to 1k USD

Sorry for the spam but I thought it was relevant to the conversation.

I looked up Zareason on E-bay and nothing came up. System 76 I found but mostly used. I've heard of Pinebooks but read they are back ordered. There's SO many laptops out there. I just want one that's not going to crap out in 5 years or less. I bought my first brand new laptop in 2009. I had it 2 weeks and spilt coffee on it and killed it. I've been buying used ever since and really got good use out of them. I'm scared shitless to buy new again lol. Someone make a suggestion please. I don't want to get a DELL or HP just because there the only name brands I know. ;-)

I'm hearing a lot of good stuff about these Leveno's. I'm looking in the $250 to $350 price range. Amazon has these two laptop with great specs. One is called the fusion5. The other is Yello something. I saw a thinkpad I for $199. Did they even make a Thinkpad 2 or did they just jump to the Thinkpad 3? I'd like to get the most bang for my buck but not sure if saving money with the off name brands is the smart move. Should I be worried about buying refurbed or stick with brand new? Thanks for that MRO. If I had the space I'd love to go back to a desktop. Right now it's not an option. Now I have 7 laptops on my wish list with your suggestion. I'm trying to understand why I should get a refurb when I can get new for the same price. I emailed one of the sellers today asking that very question. I have a feeling warantee is gonna come in to play. Thats part is VERY important to me. I have to be able to send it back without a hassle I have a problem. I've believe Amazon has a 3 month no questions policy and up to a year on all machines they sell. My last NEW laptop wans an HP. I loved it until a spilled coffee on it and killed it. How long has your GF had the HP you got her? Is she a heavy user? I know heat is a big factor to consider too. ACK! lol Thanks

The RAM is part of the "System on a chip" in the new M1 package. So it's acutally integrated into the CPU. Makes it fast as hell, but there are only 8 gig and 16 gig options right now. I anticipate 32 gig and possibly 64 gig versions in some sort of "step-up" release of the chip in 6 months or so.

The iMac has upgradable memory. Along with the Mac Pro. I don't believe any others do.

Macs hold their resell value. A typical mac will last you a good 5+ years (unless you really cheap out). Then you can either resell it or hand it off to a relative.

Woz was the hobbiest. He wanted all the parts to be upgradable. Jobs strove for simple, elegant design. Computers for the consumer that wasn't interested in opening up the case. Laptops haven't been upgradable since the unibody design was released in the early 2010's. From time to time they release a Mac Pro which has all the upgradeable capabilities.

Yup, I was able to sell my 2012 MacBook Pro for a tidy profit and buy this 2015 MacBook Pro that is still chugging along today.

This model is stuck at the 8GB of RAM it came with but at least I was able to upgrade the SSD to 512GB after the fact.

I can understand them wanting it to be fast (and I've heard benchmarks are showing the M1 Macs are quite a bit faster than Intel Macs), but it's really nice to be able to customize the system more easily.

The iMac has upgradable memory. Along with the Mac Pro. I don't believe any others do.

hmm.. It used to be you could also upgrade the memory (and storage) in the Mac Mini and the Mac laptops. I think they're good systems, but overall I'm not really impressed with the lack of upgradeability.

All soldered on board, even with the new mini.

hmm.. A few years ago, I thought I read Apple was going back to making
the RAM (and maybe storage drive?) removable so you could upgrade them.
I don't know why they'd make it all soldered on.

Money... look at the upcharge pricing to go from 8-16gb ram and from
256gb storage... +$200 each increment, far more than the costs
    associated with those parts.

Wouldn't expect to see a 32/64gb variant short of an M2 variant in 18
months or so, when they get ready to deprecate their current Intel line.

Not anymore... the mini had upgrade options, no longer. The mini also
lost 10G lan option, and cut back on Thunderbolt ports. Also, doesn't currently support eGPU, may not until a new chip either.

From time to time they release a Mac Pro which has all the upgradeable capabilities.

Macbooks (except Air iirc) were upgradeable until the mid-2014 model.
That's when the soldered the memory onboard. They also used a different interface for nvme storage than the rest of the PC industry, so required
an adapter, though never tried any.

I only know because I bought one, and found out the hard way, wound up exchanging at an Apple store for the top option as I needed more memory
than the baseline and had to give a presentation the following monday.

Passed it off to my daughter last year. Still runs pretty well, was
also the last Mac with NVidia GPU, which has its' own support issues at
this point... fortunately she doesn't play games on it.

Yep. One time I bought a 2011 Macbook (the last year they made the 17" version), and I bought a RAM upgrade elsewhere. Due to it being non-Apple RAM, if I went into the information screen (or somewhere), it had a warning saying I was using 3rd-party RAM modules. Apple would charge at least 1.5x as much as I paid elsewhere for the RAM.

(Don't quote me on this, I haven't really taken a close look at Macs lately) Macs these days come sealed, as in they are like glue sealed. They really don't want you to upgrade on your own.

My mom called me yesterday, her macbook is running slow after the latest update. I really should of disabled major OS updates years ago. Apple just keeps throwing on new features until people just give up and buy a new system. Blah.

Is it easy to put Ubuntu on a Macbook?

After a major Mac Os update a lot of indexing takes place that can temporarly slow the machine. It might improve after a day or so of background tasks.

I'm assuming this was the Big Sur update that was released a week or so ago.

Probably, or used... the new M1 Mac Mini is still about $200 overprised ($699), and they want another $200 to go from 256gb storage to 512gb.

For that price, you could get a Turbo Nerded (IBM) Thinkpad if you're lucky. The Lenovo knock offs are okay, I have one and it "just works."

Macs hold their resell value. A typical mac will last you a good 5+ years (unless you really cheap out). Then you can either resell it or hand it off to a relative.

My dad traded a motorcycle for a Mosin Nagant and a Mac Book once. I absolutely hated that thing.

Oh, a fantastic rifle, some surplus from just after the war.

It was the Macbook that was shit. It had this stupid unusable operating system, and some jackass soldered the RAM to the motherboard. It made me wonder if they wanted to make sure their delinquent and abhorently minded son wouldn't rip the RAM out thinking it was edible. I wouldn't beleive that any hardware manufacturer would go through that much unessecary effort, so I only ever really used the thing for Porn and a very short time for shitposting when all of my other daily drivers were down. Around the same time I also had to use my neighbors wifi, which only got signal in my car, in my front yard.

What a weird time to be alive.

The Motorcycle was some crotch rocket, I wasn't old enough not intrested in learning at the time. I would prefer something I could cruise comfortably in, possibly attach saddle bags for storage. So in that sence me and him had different prefrences, but the bike was good for what it was.

The Nagant was fantastic, a prime rifle of it's particular year. Came with bayonette and some other fixins'.

The Mac was shit. Read my last post.
